  • 1977 - 1984 Glasgow University, Department of Microbiology - Graduated with First Class Honours in Microbiology
  • 1981 - 1984 Edinburgh University, Department of Molecular Biology, Ph.D. with Professor Neil Willetts. Awarded a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in December 1984 - Title of thesis: The transposable elements and conjugation system of the IncN plasmid R46

Post-Doctoral Experience
  • 1985 - 1988 Institute for Genetics, University of Cologne and Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Cologne - Received a Royal Society European Exchange Fellowship and an EMBO long-term Fellowship to work as a post doctoral fellow with Professor Peter Starlinger

Tenured positions
  • 1989 - 2001 Research group leader at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge, UK. In March 1990 moved with the Institute to the Cambridge Laboratory, John Innes Centre, Norwich.
  • 2001 - In January 2001 appointed as a Director of the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne
