Lutgarde Buydens - Biography#

Lutgarde Buydens obtained the degree of Pharmacy (1978) from the Brussels Free University in Belgium with the distinction cum laude and her PhD (1986) from the same university on the subject "Structure activity relationships”, also with the distinction cum laude (supervisor Prof.dr. Luc Massart and co-supervisor prof.dr. Paul Geerlings . From 1982-1983 she worked as a researcher in the group of Prof. William Dunn at the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, USA.

In 1989 she accepted a faculty position at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands within the Institute for Molecules and Materials, Faculty of Sciences, where she is now Full Professor and head of the Analytical Chemistry department.

From 2012-2015 she was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science of Radboud University.

She has been awarded major prizes in her field: in 2012 the EAS award for outstanding achievements in chemometrics and in 1992, the first `Elsevier Chemometrics Award' for noteworthy accomplishments in chemometrics by younger scientists.

In 2000 she received the Belgian "Christophe Plantin Award" for outstanding accomplishments of a Belgian citizen abroad.

Her research interests are the development of novel methods for Chemometric data handling and the interpretation of complex multivariate data, generated in chemical/biological fields, which do not exhibit well behaved statistical characteristics and can not be analyzed by the application of standard techniques. Her philosophy is to perform methodological research that is valuable across different application areas and to focus on application oriented research in which these methods can be applied and validated for pioneering science in chemistry and biology.

Her research has been carried out in (inter)national collaborative projects, including as many as many as 5 European Collaboration Consortia.

She has (co)authored 264 scientific papers, 4 handbooks, and 270 conference papers.
