Scientific activity:

In the first period he worked in the field of nuclear spectroscopy, and together with his collaborators achieved outstanding results, among others in studying bremsstrahlung accompanying radioactive decay processes. From the 1970 years on his interest was focussed on the research of ion-atom collision processes. Significant results were obtained on the capture of electrons by bombarding ions into continuous state. He has more than 200 scientific papers published mainly in well known journals of the fields.

Honours, prizes, awards:

Dénes Berényi was honoured by the Awards of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences twice 1963, l969. In 1965 he got the Selényi Award from Roland Eötvös Physical Society. At the Kossuth University Debrecen he got the title of university docent in 1966, the title of professor in 1974. As government honour he got the golden grade of the Order of Labour in 1980. In 1981 he was the winner of the Medal of Roland Eötvös Phys. Society of the year. In 1988 he obtained the State Award. From 1990 to 1992 he was vice-president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 1993 to 1999 he was president of the Debrecen Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1993 became a honorary freeman of Debrecen city. He got the „Pázmány Péter” award of the Pro Renovanda Cultura Hungariae in 1997 and in 1998 the Dr. honoris causa title from the Debrecen University. In 2000 Dénes Berényi got Placket of the Council of Hajdú-Bihar Country and the Pro Scientia Award of the Debrecen Regional Center and Tolerance Award of the Debrecen Jewish Community. In 2002 he got the Medal of Apáczai and got the medal from the Hungarian Government “Kisebbségekért”. He has got the Doctor Honoraris Causa of the Uzhgorod University and the award of the “Gróf Mikó Imre” from the Societatea Muzeului Ardelean of Cluj in 2005. In 2006 Dénes Berényi was honoured by the “Marx György” Medal from ELFT and the Silver Award of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 2008 Dénes Berényi got the Dr. honoris causa title from Babes-Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca) and he got the “Szily Kálmán plaquette” from the journal Természet Világa. The University of Debrecen awarded a medal to him in the same year. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory named the (5694)3051 P-L asteorid after him.
