Jan Baetens - Curriculum Vitae#


Jan Baetens (b. 1957) is Full Professor at the University of Leuven (Belgium), where he directs the cultural studies program (http://www.culturelestudies.be) and collaborates with the Lieven Gevaert Centre for Photography and Visual Studies (http://www.lievengevaertcentre.be).

His main research fields are :

  • Contemporary French poetry
  • Photography theory and criticism
  • Minor genres in visual narratives (comics, graphic novel, photographic novel)
  • Methodology of Cultural Studies (with a special emphasis on semiotics)

He is the founding editor of the literary journals conséquences (1983-1991), Formules, revue des écritures à contraintes (since 1997), FPC/Formes poétiques contemporaines (since 2002) and the bilingual peer-reviewed academic e-journal Image (&) Narrative (since 1999: http://www.imageandnarrative.net).

Since 2004 he is a contributing editor of History of Photography (Taylor & Francis). He is also member of the reading committee of various academic and other journals and series such as Visual Studies, LGC Series (Leuven UP), Adaptation: The Journal of Literature on Screen Studies (Oxford University Press), Regards Croisés (Univ. Paris 8), InfoCom (De Boeck), « Texte/Image » (Minard).

Jan Baetens has published more than 400 articles in journals like:Poétique, Littérature, Critical Inquiry, Poetics Today, Romanic Review, etc.

He is the (co)author and/or co(editor) of more than forty volumes and special issues.

As a poet, he has published ten books of poetry (all in French), some of them in collaboration with graphic artists. In 2007, he has been awarded the « Prix triannuel de poésie de la Communauté française de Belgique ».
