  • Archival sciences: history of the archival sciences and institutions, comparative research in archival law, etc.
  • History of the institutions and of civil service (since the late 18th century)
  • Social and cultural history of medicine and society during the modern and contemporary period: study of the history of medical education in Belgium since the late 18th century.
  • Social and political history of law and justice during the modern and contemporary period
  • Policy of the Belgian ministers of justice between the First and the Second World War
  • Political history of justice reforms since the 19th century

Honours and Awards
  • 2010 Member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for the Sciences and the Arts
  • 2007 Member of the Royal Historical Commission (Royal Decree of 14 April 2008)
  • 2006 - 2010 Member of the Executive Board and president of the Audit Commission ACOM of the International Council on Archives (); since September 2010 only member of ACOM; since then secretary-general of EURBICA, the European ‘branch’ of the International Council on Archives and member of the ‘Working group on displaced archives’
  • 2005 Member of the Executive Board of the The Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen)
