  • 2012 to present: Founder and CEO, ATLA Lasers, in Trondheim, Norway. ATLA is focused on picosecond and femtosecond mid-IR lasers for chemical fingerprinting of organic compounds and advanced materials processing applications
  • 2003 to 2014: Founder and CEO, Multiwave Photonics, in Porto, Portugal. Multiwave was focused on pulsed fiber lasers for industrial, monitoring and biomedical applications. In 2012 the high power laser business was sold to a multinational company and the fiber-optic module business was transferred to the spin-off company MWTechnologies
  • 2000-2002 : Tenured Full Professor of Electrical Engineering, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computers, University of Porto, Portugal
  • 1985-2000: Tenured Associate Professor of Physics, Dept. of Physics, University of Porto
  • 1981-1984: Associate Professor of Physics, Dept. of Physics, University of Porto
  • 1995-2000: Co-Founder and Director of R&D, ENT, SA (EFACEC Industrial Group). ENT was focused on fiber-optic based integrated networks serving data, voice and video applications in utility companies
