Aspect 3: Climate change#

Warming and acidification (probably due to the rise of carbon dioxide) have many effects:
  • Ice caps are rapidly melting and summer sea ice will disappear in the Arctic within 20 years
  • Ecosystems epitomized by polar bears and penguins will disappear within our children’s lifetimes
  • Species’ ranges are galloping towards the poles
  • Tropical reef corals are dying because of coral bleaching and disease
  • Calcifying organisms like corals, snails, and major groups of plankton are gravely threatened because the oceans are becoming more acidic
